Our subscription to Sky tv costs the best part of 70 Euro a month, so, over the year over 800 Euro. Our television license on the other hand costs around 150 Euro. We want to see how that expenditure can work better for us. There is nothing other than the car and mortgage we spend more on. Sky tv, the Sky subscription, is one of our biggest spends.
We're not necessarily unhappy with that. Sky One is turning into a decent service, the sports are good, and the Sky Box is useful to us because it is integrated into our viewing. We use it more than we did a video recorder, even though as yet we don't use it much. let me underline, Sky tv is good. Sky tv customer service is good. Sky tv programmes are good....
What we see on the TV and in newspapers though is that the 150 Euro (£150 in the UK) is the object of much protest and even of prosecutions because some people won't pay. Here we are paying 800 Euro and nobody seems to mind.
Isn't it about time we recognise Sky for the huge cultural institution it really is? Just because it belongs to the private sector, is that a reason not to try to embrace it in some way that could influence its development, the services, its tone etc.
